Primary Purpose:
The substitute teacher is responsible for managing an assigned classroom, carrying out
appropriate learning activities, and following lesson plans developed by the classroom
teacher to ensure that students’ education is not disrupted during the classroom teacher of
record’s absence.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
High school diploma or GED
Valid Texas educational aide certificate preferred/not required
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to work well with children
Ability to communicate effectively
Experience:
Some experience working with children
COGNITIVE/MENTAL DEMANDS:
Concentration (detailed work and attention to the task), effective communication (verbal/written), ability to read and comprehend written materials (lesson plans, student information, textbooks, policy, procedure, data), reasoning skills, ability to understand and carry out verbal instructions, analysis and differentiation of information, ability to simultaneously coordinate multiple tasks, compiling and collating, simple mathematical computations, emotional control.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Walking, standing, reaching, repetitive hand motions, hearing, speech, visual acuity, distinguishing colors.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:
Work assignments may require the employee to work inside or outside; the work environment may be noisy, work alone, some biological exposure (insects, mold, fungi, bacteria, plants, etc.).
DESCRIPTION OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Present lessons and subject matter in a manner that students understand.
- Exhibit a positive role model for students that supports the mission of the school district.
- Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
- Establish and maintain control in the classroom and administer discipline in accordance with board policies, administrative regulations, and campus policies and rules.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students.
- Maintain a cooperative, professional relationship with all colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
- Must be flexible to meet the needs of the school.
- Use acceptable communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
- Stay informed of and comply with district and school regulations and policies.
- Read the Substitute Teacher Handbook.
- Maintain prompt and regular attendance for each substitute assignment.
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
General knowledge of curriculum and instruction; Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior; Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
