Job Title:         Special Education - Counselor                                 Wage/Hour Status: Exempt/202 day

Primary Purpose:

Plan, implement, and evaluate counseling as a related service for students with disabilities.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Master's degree in guidance counseling

Valid Texas counseling certificate or Licensed Professional Counselor

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of counseling procedures, student appraisal, and career development

Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills 

Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior

Knowledge of Special Education law, practices, and procedures

 

Experience:

Three years of teaching experience preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Consultation:

  1. Counsel individuals and small groups as directed by IEP.
  2. Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, educators, and other relevant people to enhance their work with students.
  3. Work with school personnel, school district residents, and community agencies to obtain resources for students.
  4. Use an effective referral process to help students and others use special programs and services.

Evaluation:

  1. Provide a complete counseling assessment, eligibility, and IEP goals for special education students who are eligible for counseling services.

 

  1. Assist and consult with Psychologist or LSSP regarding psychological evaluations.
  2. Prepare or assist with the development of functional behavioral assessments and behavior intervention plans.
  3. Conduct reevaluations at least every three years to determine eligibility for continued counseling services.
  4. Provide progress reports on counseling goals according to the schedule established by the ARD committee.
  5. Participate in professional development to improve skills related to job assignments.

Program Management:

  1. Assist in developing continuing evaluation counseling services and make changes based on findings.
  2. Compile, submit, maintain, and file all required physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required by the district and IDEA.
  3. Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rules, and board policy.
  4. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
  5. Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors.
  6. Communicate effectively with colleagues, students, and parents.
  7. Maintain confidentiality of information regarding students and parents.
  8. Perform other duties/responsibilities as assigned by the Director/Administration.
